Summary: The Coogee Hotel was built in the 1890s and first licensed as a pub in 1898. In 1927 it was delicensed in a government attempt to reduce the number of licensed hotels in the state, and in 1930 it was bought by the Anglican Diocese and became a holiday home for the Anglican Girls' Orphanage. In 1946 as a vacant building it was threatened by squatters desperate for housing in the post-war crunch and so it became a permanent orphanage home. The photograph shows a group of adults and children sitting in a grassed area with the recognisable limestone walls of the old hotel behind them, as well as a newer weatherboard building in the background. The wall is most likely an old wing that ran north-south behind the current hotel buildings, and the weatherboard structure was set slightly to the south of the main house. From Anglican archives: "'Barbeque area at Coogee - note new wing - bathroom and laundry... in 1948 a new ablution block and laundry had been built, giving an approximate date for this image."
