Summary: Mr Thomas Walker, Minister for Education, officially opened the Spearwood State School on Saturday 27 June 1914 with 500 people in attendance. He made a speech extolling the 'evidence of the progress of education', noting that Spearwood children who would attend the school came not only from the British Empire but also from Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. This demonstrated that 'the ideal of democracy was shown when the newly-made Australian from those far-off countries would see his child sit side by side with the child from England.'
