Summary: On the evening of 15 July 1903 one of the buildings used to store explosives at the government facility beside Robb Jetty was blown to pieces with a nightwatchman inside. Thomas Whelan was killed instantly, and the ensuing inquest made headlines across the country. The building that exploded was small, only 10x10ft, and of the eight buildings in the magazine enclosure it was the closest to both the shore and to the Robb Jetty cattle complex. The surrounding dunes protected each building from any potential ignition points, which worked well on this occasion, with minimal damage recorded by all the other buildings.
