Summary: In August 1935 the Majestic Theatre in Fremantle (now Manning Arcade in the High Street Mall) held a wheelbarrow race as promotion for a swimming carnival they were also sponsoring. 33 pairs entered the race, one 'pusher' and one 'sitter' in each, and thousands of spectators lined the streets from the starting line at the Newmarket Hotel in Hamilton Hill to the finish line, three miles away at the Fremantle Esplanade. The winning pair made the distance in 24 minutes 10 seconds. [LH.1288]
